I love stories of how couples initially meet. Every love story starts somewhere and here is our story.
Our journey began 11 years ago in Germany. Still in love. We grew together and will continue to do so. I sometimes think about where I would be if I never decided to enlist active duty and go to Germany. Would we have met? Would it be different? Well, none of that matters because we are together now. It will be 10 years of marriage in August.
Our first encounter isn’t a story we share because it was very random. I was with a friend at a small store within the hospital. My friend was purchasing some questionable items and we were discussing it loudly. I wasn’t paying too much attention to my surroundings, but apparently, I caught his attention. Go figure, right? He would mention this later.
Our first time speaking to one another would happen a few days later. We were in this head start class together. This is a class that all incoming service members must go through when arriving in country. I had already been in Germany for a few weeks, but because of the holidays my class didn’t start until after the new year. While waiting for the shuttle to take us to class, he comes up to me and ask if this is the line for the shuttle. I tell him yes, but I tell him he is in the wrong uniform if this is his first day. I lied to him. Yes, my first time speaking to him was a lie. I had a reason though. My friend did not make it to the shuttle stop yet and there were only so many seats in the shuttle van. I thought I do her a favor by telling him to change clothes so her and me could ride together. I know I was terrible. Well, he heads off and my friend makes it just in time. I don’t see him again until I make it to the head start class. As soon as I get settled into my seat, he walks over with this intense look on his face. He proceeds to tell me that I gave him the wrong information and if he hadn’t asked someone else on the way to his room, he probably would have been late. He said my story didn’t even sound right. I tell him okay nonchalantly. He leaves and goes into a different class. A few minutes later, the instructor from the other class asks my instructor if there are any seats available in our class. Well, there so happens to be one seat. It’s the one right next to me. The instructor then tells the other to send over the person that needs a seat. This was the first time I got a real good look of this fella. He looked bothered, but incredible handsome. Something told me don’t let him out of your sight and he is it. It was a strange, but a comforting feeling. As he looks around the classroom, I say to him “Hey, Cofield, come here.” He sat next to me and the rest is history.
He has been by my side for the good and the bad. Our love is something that can’t be described, and I love it. Somehow, we work.
